Blog 7 | Kittens Got Claws
Ever wondered why your cat scratches at your lovely furniture or carpets? Hopefully we can share some information that can help you understand your cat a little more.
Research shows that cats can scratch for a few reasons, to keep their claws in top condition or to communicate. By plucking their claws they can leave a scent on the surface of what they are scratching. This is from scent glands that are in the cats paw pads. The marks and smells along with the shredded claws indicates a message to other moggy's nearby.
DOES YOUR CAT SCRATCH INDOORS?
If you have a cat that does not venture outdoors, they may not have the opportunity to naturally scratch so will turn to your prized sofa, posh carpets or even windows and doors. They maybe scratching as they are trying to tell you they are insecure or stressed. Are they marking their territory? It could be due to the presence of another feline nearby too. However the reasons can change over time. For example, if they pluck at your sofa constantly they may get more attention. A great way to stop this is to install a proper cat scratching pole and encourage them to use it. Praise them when they do and ignore them if they go back to your sofa. Try locating the pole close to the problem area where the scratching happens. You can also try scratching pads or card board if they pull on the carpets. Again place this over the suspect area. Over time you can move this to a more suitable location.
We all know cats can be fussy so install a scratcher per cat in different areas around the house. You could possibly try infusing the surface with catnip to encourage the cat to use it.
Remember to play with your cat and keep it entertained to divert its attention away from scratching and make it feel more secure and less anxious. Finally, maintain their claws. They can be clipped to take the sharpness away but never declaw them. Seek advice from a vet if you have any issues with your cats claws.
